the girl in this image is kaitlyn hunt, a high school senior in indian river county, florida. kaitlyn hunt is an upstanding student with an exemplary record and plenty of extracurricular activities. she’s in the choir, she’s a cheerleader, she’s a basketball player, and she was even voted “most school spirit” in the school’s yearbook.

on february 16th, she was arrested for lewd and lascivious battery on a child age 12-16 for being in a same sex relationship with a fellow 15 year old student. the relationship started when kaitlyn was 17 and her girfriend was 15. as soon as kaitlyn turned 18, her girlfriend’s parents went to the police, had her arrested, and got her expelled from school. not only that, but she had previously already been kicked off the basketball team for being in a same sex relationship.

kaitlyn’s girlfriend INSISTS that the relationship is 100% consensual, but the law doesn’t grant her any legal say in the matter, so her parents are able to press charges regardless of her opinion. and because of that, kaitlyn is facing two years of house arrest and a year of probation. they never spoke to kaitlyn’s parents or the school to say they had a problem with the girls dating. they simply went to the police and got her arrested.

it would be very simple for anyone to argue that age is the defining factor in this situation, but you and i both know that’s total bullshit. the girls were minors when they started dating. the parents stated that “there is no way our daughter is gay.”

this was driven by the homophobia of those parents, plain and simple. if this was an 18 year old male and a 15 year old girl, nobody would give a shit. it happens ALL the time in high schools across the country. but because this young woman, who planned on being a nurse, is now facing felony charges because she was in a same sex relationship.

this is not okay. we need to show our support for kaitlyn and send a message to florida legislators that the selective enforcement of laws like this is NOT okay and that we will NOT stand for this.

if you’d liike to support kaitlyn’s cause, you can sign this petition, and you can donate money to help pay for the family’s legal funds here.

if you’re from florida, you should also find and email your representatives and tell them selective legislation biased against homosexuals, especially teenagers, is simply NOT OKAY!!!!

So my mom and I have been working the same waitress job for 5-6 years now. She had been waitressing years before, but this is recently. Anyway, about… 15 minutes ago this guy she waited on left and told her to take care. Just that. Prior to this she had talked to him about Italy. Her people are from Florence, this and that, and she said she’s never been. She’s got 8 years of art education and she’s working a waitress job. It’s pretty… Sad and disappointing, I guess. Her and my father divorced 6 years ago and she hasn’t had a real job ever. Just been stuck in a small town she’s not from.

This man who we have never seen before tipped her 1000 dollars for a trip to Italy. Walked out, not another word.

…you know. Just when I start to lose faith in humanity….Hm.

Did you know that Billy Mays saved my life? Did you also know that I had never even met the man.

So how could he have saved my life if he didn’t even know me? It’s a funny thing how we all interact with each other and touch each others’ lives without even knowing it and this is how Billy impacted my life in a way that I could never begin to repay:

I’ve had issues with depression since I was an early teen; however, college was by far the worst. I was in a new city, didn’t know a soul, and felt horribly lost. (Funnily enough, that new city was Pittsburgh.) Even after making a few friends, and settling in, my depression was still pretty severe. It was this time in my life that my issues with insomnia started in earnest. It was nothing to be up for 30 hours and still not be able to sleep. Well, as anyone who’s been up late knows, there’s not a whole lot on TV. I’d flip through the channels, after awhile not even really paying any attention, just spacing out and clicking the remote.

While I’d be staring blankly at the TV, my mind was in a whole other place: A very ugly place. I’d be thinking the most horrible thoughts and just couldn’t seem to stop it. Nothing could get my attention. Then one night, when I was really down in the pits, drooling like a zombie with remote control clicking OCD, I was thinking things that make no sense now, but then consumed me. Let me play it out for you:

My Creepy, Icky (did I mention super-emo?) Inner Thoughts: “I hate it here. No one likes me. I have no friends. I miss my family. I suck at my classes. My parents are going to kill me. I’ll lose my scholarship if I don’t do better. I’m so useless. I’m worthless. I should just—-“

And then I heard it: Loud enough to shake me out of this spiral of self loathing and pity:

“Hi! Billy Mays here!”

I couldn’t tell you what specific product it was, but I do remember that I smiled at this loud and goofy guy on the TV who managed to pull me out of a dark and scary place just by introducing himself.

From that night on, when I couldn’t sleep, I’d be thrilled to see if a Billy Mays infomercial was on, because I knew that it would be entertaining and I could get my mind out of the dark, even if only for an hour. Billy would lay it out straight: here’s the product, here’s what it does, this is why you should buy it, and here’s how to buy it; but wait, there’s more! And even though there was always a certain formula to it, it was never boring because of that; it was reassuring. I got amped up as it started, listened intently to all the specs, and then cursed that I only had $5 in my bank account and was out of ramen noodles.

Some nights the steady rhythm of the infomercial would chug along and I’d happily realize that I wasn’t alone at 3am on a Tuesday night. They wouldn’t show advertisements like this if no one else were watching. It was comforting to know that someone else out there was feeling the way I did and concentrating on just how the hell those Zorbees picked up all the liquid or if Kaboom even stood a chance against the dorm’s showers. Given time, I couldn’t even tell you how to find that troubling place in the back of my mind.

Whether it was OxiClean or OranGlow, it didn’t matter. Billy didn’t sell the products. No, Billy sold you himself first, and then as a FRIEND let you in on the latest must have. It never felt like Billy was trying to sell me, he never came across as pushy, he was just an easy-going guy letting me know about this cool new thing he’d found out about.

After awhile, I could distract myself by mentally listing off how some of the other infomercials lacked in comparison. Mentally, I was the one guy and two robots from Mystery Science Theater heckling these programs to myself. “Hi, My name is Cardboard-Dude-Whose-Name-You’ll-Forget-Shortly, I’m here to sell you stuff!” or “Look at how unique and eye-catching I am with punctuation marks stuck all over my clothes!” would probably have rattled around in there at some point or other. Even this silly stupid thing of making fun of the TV set made me feel better, and again I had Billy to thank for it.

Over the years I managed to find a sleep pattern that befit someone living and not undead, but I’d always remember Billy Mays. Sometimes after a stressful week I’d have trouble sleeping, and there would be Billy showing off some new do-dad or gizmo. Not long before Pitchmen started airing, I started having insomnia issues again (don’t worry, no crazy inner thoughts this time!), and would always catch the encore after my husband nodded off for the night. Seeing Billy and Sully playing off of each other, driving each other insane, and all the other craziness they got up to would have me shaking as I tried to not wake my husband laughing. Once more, Billy saved my sanity.

When I heard the news about the loss of Billy, it broke my heart. I never realized just how much he had touched my life until that day, and my heart ached for his family and friends. I reached out the only way I knew how and added Billy III, Sully, and Arwen on Twitter, hoping that my love and support could course through the internet and be some form of comfort.

I want to let the world know that Billy was a hero. Sure he didn’t wear tights or a cape, have x-ray vision or super strength, he was just a guy in a blue shirt with that signature beard and booming voice, but he was a hero to me nonetheless.

If I ever hear anyone say, “Just what did Billy Mays ever do?” I’ll be happy to tell them:

“Billy Mays saved my life, what have you done lately?”

howtoleavetheozarks:

Who worked until our backs stiffened and our limbs sang with the memory of misbehaviour that was what it was to be a woman

Who dared to dance until dawn and were drugged and raped by men in clean T-shirts and woke up scared and sore to be told it was our fault

Who swallowed bosses’ patronizing side-eyes stole away from violent broken boys in the middle of the night and vowed never again to try to fix the world one man at a time

Who slammed down the tray of drinks and tore off our aprons and aching smiles and went scowling out into the streets looking for change

Who stripped in dark rooms for strangers’ anodyne dollars because we wanted education and were told we were traitors

Who sat faces upturned to the glow of the network searching searching for strangers who would call us pretty

Who bared our breasts to hidden cameras and fought and fought and fought to be human

Who waited in grim hallways with synth-pop crackling over the speaker system for the doctor to call us clutching fistfuls of pamphlets calling us sluts whores murderers

Who crossed continents alone with knapsacks full of books bare limbs clear-eyed vision running running from the homes that held our mothers down

Who filled notebooks with gibberish philosophy and scraps of stories and cameras to prove we were there keeping our novels and the name of out children close to our hearts

Who were told all our lives that we were too loud too tisky too fat too ugly too scruffy too selfish too much too and refused to take up less space refused to be still refused refused refused to be tame

Who would never be still. Who would never shut up. Who were punished for it and spat and snarled and they shook the bars of our cages until they snapped and they called us wild and crazy and we laughed with mouths open hearts open hands open and would never not ever be tame.

Sara, I’m with you in hospital, in the narroe rooms where you have put off your veil to count your ribs through your T-shirt, short hair and secrets and quiet defiance crying together that we don’t know how to be perfect-

Lara, I’m with you in mandatory art therapy, where we draw pictures of weeping cocks and are told we are not making progress-

Lila, I’m with you in a north London bathdroom, watchhing unreal maggots crawl in the cuts in your arms and listening to your girlfriend drunk and raging through the wall-

Andy, I’m with you in Bethnal Green where you love ambitious angry women with heart brain pen fingers tongue and you have a line from Nietzche tattooed over your cunt-

Adele, I’m with you in the student occupation, with your lipstick and cloche hat and teenage lisp drawling that there’s not enough fucking in this revolution and we must take action-

Kay, I’m with you on the night bus, half drunk and high dragging bright-eyed boys home to our bed, where we watch them worn out sleeping and whisper that we will never be married-

Katie, I’m with you in Zuccotti Park, where a broken heart is less important than a broken laptop is less important than a broken future and we watch the cops beating kids bloody on the pavement for daring to ask for more-

Tara, I’m with you in Islington where you have thrown all your pretty dresses out of the window and flushed your medication so you can write and write-

Alex, I’m with you and a bottle of Scotch at two in the morning when you tell me that no man will make us live for ever and we must seduce the city the country the world-

We are always hungry.

There are more of us than you think.
”

-
Laurie Penny’s Saudade, from Fifty Shades of Feminism (via mollycrabapple)
